Tomas Vu and Rirkrit Tiravanija are teaming up again to create Do We Dream Under the Same Sky? an exhibition that will start with a weekend-long t-shirt printing performance event at CHAOS in Tokyo’s Omotesando area. Opening June 8, there will be t-shirts printed with the artists’ collaborative pairings of imagery and text. In addition to the performance, works included in the exhibition will feature a selection of Vu and Tiravanija’s newspaper artworks. This show is part of an ongoing series of performances and installations by both artists.
The exhibition integrates text and portraits of a range of figures from music, film and art, to politics, with a live t-shirt printing performance. This deeply personal and politically charged series is rooted in the spirit of resistance, a theme that resonates profoundly all over the world. Highlighting moments of rebellion against the norm, the invader, and the colonial power, the work implicates viewers and asks them to question the cultural climate around them. If you are asking questions, you have an awareness and are no longer complacent.
Within the chaotic rhythms and entangled paths of the world, however, there is interconnectivity and a potential for unity. The theme of defiance is woven throughout the work as both a call to action and perhaps an offering of peace.
